Danish Soap Finish Five-Gallons

A non-toxic all-natural wood finish with easy cleanup.

A Danish Soap Finish is a tried and true wood finish, that’s been used in Nordic and Scandinavian countries for centuries.

Use on bare wood floors and bare wood furniture

Ready to use right out of the can.

Super easy to apply.

A Danish Soap Finish is something that continues to build up over time and develops a beautiful patina and sheen.

Some woods will soak up more Danish Soap Finish than others.

We recommend testing our soap finish on a scrap of the same wood.

Some woods may darken more than others. (Pine is pictured to the left)

Not recommended for use on engineered woods, plywood, or veneers.

This is an interior finish, and not recommended for outdoor use.

For use on bare woods only.

Ingredients: Danish Soap

Made in the USA

Environmentally Friendly

Contains No Petrochemicals or VOCs

Directions for applying Thomas’ Danish Soap Finish:

First application: Ready to use right out of the can do not dilute. Apply only to bare unfinished wood. First sand your project up to your desired grit, 220 is usually sufficient, and vacuum or wipe off wood dust. Give soap a gentle stir. Using a paintbrush or paint roller apply a generous coat of Danish Soap Finish to the wood, and allow to soak in and dry. Don’t bother wiping off excess soap until the last coat. After the first coat is totally dry you may need to do a light sanding to knock down the grain that was raised. Reapply as many coats as you like, but when the wood doesn’t seem to be soaking up any more soap you are done.  On the last coat, before it completely dries, wipe off any excess soap with a cotton towel. When dry buff with a cotton towel if desired to create a light sheen.

~Note: Our Danish Soap Finish is normally pretty thick right out of the can, especially in the colder months. It can be warmed in a pan, on the stove. This will liquefy the soap allowing for better penetration to the wood. It’s not necessary, but you may find it helpful and easier to apply. The soap should liquefy at approximately 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not heat to boiling, or your shop may fill with bubbles.

Maintenance: Use straight out of the pail, or may be diluted up to 3:1. When your wood is appearing dirty and dull reapply our Thomas’ Danish Soap Finish with a paintbrush, rag, or mop and allow to soak in. Before soap is fully dry wipe off excess with a cotton towel. You can also at any time spot treat any dirt or stain or discolored spot using this technique with a brush or rag. Tip: Keep a spray bottle on hand mixed at 3:1 for ease and convenience. Give your wood a regular soaping every couple of months or as needed. This will help nourish and protect the wood.

Coverage: This five-gallon pail is perfect for big jobs like soaping several pieces of furniture, or the floors of a couple rooms.

Q. Why use soap as a wood finish?

A. Great question! Soap is made from oils and fats, and after it has saponified, it becomes kind of a waxy like substance. A Danish soap finish is like an oil, and a wax, all-in-one. This is what makes it a really great wood finish that has been used for hundreds of years, and possibly even thousands of years.
